Opening July 2, Gascoine Gallery of Monson, ME, celebrates the majesty of mountains in Apex, a fine art exhibition of works by 15 artists in painting, pottery and photography. I have contributed three photographs of mountains in polar regions:
Iceberg and Fata Morgana, Cape Royds, Antarctica (above) was photographed during my stay at a penguin colony in Antarctica in 2015. Between the iceberg and the mountains the hazy horizontal band is a strange atmospheric effect called a fata morgana that occasionally occurs over bodies of water in polar regions and causes distorted reflections to appear to hover in the air above the water.
Matterhorn Framed by Ventifacts, Dry Valleys, Antarctica (below left) looks through an opening through giant wind-eroded boulders (ventifacts) at a mountain named for the famous Swiss Alps peak.
Red Sandstone Mountains, East Greenland (below right) was photographed on my first visit to Greenland in 2010, exploring the waterways of the Scoresby Sound. We landed on the shore in Zodiac boats and walked into a fog-shrouded landscape reminiscent of the American Southwest.
The exhibition runs through December. The gallery is holding a reception on July 19, Monson Summer Festival Day with live music and refreshments from noon to 3 p.m.
