You may now turn to pages 122 and 123 of the Best Of…2024 Sourcebook. “Best Of” is the American Society of Media Photographers’ flagship members-only competition (hence the …). The organization’s membership includes nearly 7,000 professionals working in media, advertising, and fine art. Print copies of the 140-page book are being circulated to hundreds of the world’s photo buyers and agencies. The Sourcebook is now available for order. It has a two-page spread of my project about Kangerlussuaq, Greenland, which won an award for Travel Category Series (photo above). These five photos are from the photographic history of Kangerlussuaq that I have been working on since 2021, with the goal of producing a book.
Last March, as I was taking my portfolio around to reviewers at Houston Fotofest, I sometimes had to explain why the story of this remote Arctic town of just 500 people was not as arcane as it might sound. For me it is a study not only about the impact of climate change, but how US military presence overseas can initiate a series of dramatic ecological and cultural transformations that reverberate long after the Americans leave. However, neither I nor the judges who chose the ASMP winners last year could have guessed that just as this catalog was coming out, US geopolitical interests in Greenland would leap onto the front page news. Examining the history of past American military activities there — and the ongoing impact of climate change, which is also part of my project — seems very relevant indeed.
More information about how to order a copy of the Sourcebook, along with images of all the winning entries, are on ASMP’s website.
