Bidding on Marble Steps, Harlem Park (shown above) opens at 10 a.m., Thursday, July 16, in the annual Out of Order auction for Maryland Art Place (MAP). Marble steps are an iconic image of Baltimore. In the photograph above, a Paulownia tree has aggressively asserted itself with sufficient force to lift chunks of marble and sprout leaves in front of a vacant building on Carey Street in Baltimore’s Harlem Park neighborhood. This limited edition archival pigment print, measures 20 x 16 inches, is part of my 2015 Baltimore Ecosystem Study artist-in-residence project, in which I accompanied field scientists studying the relationships between nature and human activity in the urban environment. MAP has been serving and exhibiting the work of contemporary artists in Maryland since 1982. Proceeds from the sale of each piece are split 50/50 between MAP and the artist. Bidding runs through July 23 — register here.
